Who Is teta Wardeh
To Eva Maria?
I, Eva Maria Ghannam, grew up thinking that childbearing and birthing is a guaranteed trauma that women have to endure in order to attain the gift of motherhood. I didn’t want to become a mother myself for fear of what was waiting for me once I got pregnant.
I grew up not seeing any mother in my family or my family’s friends actually breastfeeding.
I wasn’t breastfed. One of my brothers was breastfed for 40 days while the other broke our family record by breastfeeding for 6 months! Mum intended to breastfeed us but she lacked the support and knowledge to do it while navigating postpartum blues and trauma.
I was doctor shopping at different medical specialists before I moved to New Zealand, almost 7 years ago.
I haven’t had a GP since.
I view physical health with a holistic lens, connected to the mind and the soul.
With my husband, I had 2 conscious conceptions, healthy pregnancies that resulted in 2 home births in water.
I breastfed my son for 28 months and still on the journey with his two year old sister.
I found my new passion and calling through my matrescence which led me to become a breastfeeding specialist and a birth and postpartum doula, and most recently a Healing Birth Practitioner.
Why Teta Wardeh then?
Wardeh وَردِه (Rose) was a wise woman in a far away village of Northern Lebanon.
She accompanied hundreds of women on their maternity, birthing and postpartum journey. Her wisdom and skill was sought after in her village and the surrounding area - she was their midwife - الداية (ed-deyeh).
She’s my great téta (grandma) and she has been calling for me to follow in her footsteps for quite a while now.
I named my doula practice in honour of Teta Wardeh’s legacy.
This practice is therefore set to document my journey of becoming a birth-keeper myself.
I will share my opinions, my learnings and the information I’m gathering as well as the packages I’m offering as a birth and postpartum doula to help mamas-to-be and fellow mamas make informed decisions that will enable them to have a natural and gentle birth, as well as establish and maintain the precious breastfeeding bond with their babies.
I have a range of Doula Support Packages on offer which you can browse. They can be customisable to your needs and payments plans options are available.
I’d also be happy for you to connect with me on Instagram and Facebook or via email.
Better yet, you can sign up to my newsletter and allow Teta Wardeh to visit your inbox every now and then!
